Transient Evil: Morilantan Religion
Morilanta is split, in more ways than one. The overall philosophy of the nation focuses on the Force within us all; Evil. The difference lies in that the bulk of Morilanta believes that Evil is inherient in us all, and must be released from humanity, purged if you will. They give tribute to Evil out of a compelled necessity, for it is in them that the seed is strongest. They are the descendants of the humans who first held Evil in their hearts.
The other group reveres Evil in itself. They worship it, wholly and completely, beliving that in Evil lies the greatest of powers. For how can one fight to the best of their potential when restrained by the suffocating shackles of Love? However, these believers are few and far between (at least, outspokenly), and have been thrust out of Morilanta society. They are the Outcasts, left to live in a state that is akin to the Beasts of Beleg and the Fires of Naurorod.
It is the rest of the Morilantans that we will focus on.
Morilantans believe that everyone is born with Evil in their hearts and souls. Some are born with more than others. The children of rape are born with higher amounts of evil than those born otherwise. This can be explained by looking at the Morilantan idea of how Evil is taken out of the hearts of people.
Evil can be diffused, and it is through diffusion that people can be freed from the burden they carry from birth. The best way to diffuse evil, is to do evil things to people. The more ‘pure’ the victim, the more evil they are able to take into themselves. For every cruel act a person inflicts, they are lightening the load of their soul. If a man rapes a woman, he not only passes some of that evil to the woman he raped, but to the children born from the union. Often, these children are slaughtered, their blood washing away the taint.
Blood is a powerful agent in Morilantan belief. If one is not able, for whatever reason, to diffuse their evil through acts on others, they still have salvation in bleeding evil out of themselves. This is usually done in a priestly ritual, and generally the one being bled dies. However, the priests assure the masses that though they have died as a result, their soul flies free, purified.
There is two more major aspects of the religion, involving the central power figures in their society. There is their Leader, often going by different titles based on the whims of the current person in charge (currently it is Imperitor Nissar), and the High Priest or Priestess of Evil (currently Rajani). Their relationship is an intricate one.
The High Priestess is able to channel the ebb and flow of evil in the hearts of the people, especially those brought forth for sacrifice. It is said that she channels much of the evil in man to a single focusing source – the leader. The Leader is praised, held in awe and fear alike. Their holy text, Folio of Malevolence, states that the Leader makes a sacrifice of his very soul. He will never be redeemed, the stream of Evil constantly being channeled to him. When he dies, there shall be no salvation in the arms of the Forces. But for every act of evil he commits, he weakens the collective evil of all of Morilanta. He is their savior, their hope for salvation.
Often, whoever is most senior – the high priest or the leader – will choose their counterpart. It is only recently that this did not happen, Rajani protesting that she was too newly suceeded in her post to adequately pick her partner. It was left to the people to choose their savior. And so now, more than ever, as they kneel in the blood of their victims and pray, they pray that above all, their choice was a wise one…
